This particular image is dedicated to my Dad.

#Inktober no. 4 - the logo!

Now I'm having fun. This is the Inktober logo, rendered freehand, no ruler.

Pitt and Microns, 9" across.

Join in the fun of #Inktober! Do an ink sketch a day with traditional materials and post it with the hashtags of #Inktober or #Inktober2016. Started by Jake Parker.

#Inktober 3 - Howard Pyle tribute and master study

Sometimes you learn a lot by copying the masters. When I do a master's study, I use a blank sheet of paper and draw it from scratch, no tracing or anything like that. This is Howard Pyle, the teacher of the Brandywine School (great google search), and coach to very famous artists, like NC Wyeth and more.

I did learn a lot doing this, and I edited it a little bit, cutting the stands from the background - took me a day to figure out what that strip even was.

Here's my master study:

This is about 11" across and rendered in Pitt and Micron pens. I did a loose pencil underneath first. It took two days and I'm catching up the Inktobers as a result. #Inktober #Inktober2016

And here's the original Howard Pyle illustration:

This is a study in the different mark-making techniques for #Inktober2016.

Hummers

My friends requested a lot of different images for Inktober. Hummingbirds got a lot of mentions. This hummingbird was sketched with a Pentel Stylo pen, on multimedia paper, with Inktense watercolor pencils.

Inktober: Deep Stare

Today I went for stippling again. It's super fun the first 100 dots or so, but then as you stab the paper you keep asking yourself, why? Why did I pick this? I still love it.

Inktober: Artist loose in a petting zoo

Hey everyone! So you take an animal artist to a petting zoo and it's good times for everybody. The animals, the artist, everyone around the artist, etc.

This Inktober is dedicated to the kind people of the Animal Encounters mobile petting zoo, and their full grown turkey named "Jive." Thanks buddy, for strutting your stuff.

#Inktober 17, "Jive turkey" by DeunanB. Microns and Pigma pens. "Jive" is a turkey at the mobile Animal Encounters petting zoo (thank you!).

Inktober daily sketch: Tribute to Star Wars

I saw the original Star Wars movie, the first one, in 1977 in the theatre. It changed my life. It changed everything, for everybody. Gave us a sense of hope and escape to a better ending when the world was going to pieces.

So today I drew a tribute to the first Star Wars movie as a tip of the hat to George Lucas and the huge amount of people it took to make those stories come to life. Thank you.

#Inktober 13: Star Wars, Luke at sunset. Micron pens.

Inktober 12: Octopus

All caught up on Inktobers in one day (three at once). This one is the Pacific Giant Octopus. They have thousands of suckers, each independent of the other (that's about 1600 fingers). The arms also have independent thinking of the main animal.

Inktober 9: The Birch

Hey everyone! Today's #Inktober was rendered with Copic multiliner pens. I'm testing various types and styles of pens to find which best suits the lines I like for various looks. I'm also trying out different pen and ink presentation and composition styles too.

This birch tree is styled after Garner's Trees book. I am learning the styles of over 100 artists, to meld together into the best parts that I like for my own techniques.

Got a favorite subject you'd like me to do this month? Give me a shout!
